"No doubt the memory is selective. In the first instance, for biological questions. Then, by ideology. If the first is a" manipulation "unconscious, the second is a dry handling, instrumental . In our country, the latter serves to beautify death even after having led a terrible life .(...) The exclusion par excellence is the group of hacks and "artists" whose characters and non-transferable unique ability to capture the "glow of being" would make them immune to poop history. Thus, support Aramburu-Rojas, made the distracted and congratulate Onganía Videla are just consequences of "moral condemnation to the state of affairs that was engulfing the country" petty-bourgeois logic justifying the camp, that of devoid of any civil courage, the weaklings, the "left right" (and back) can do the permission or raising a fist, saturated yes "moral" and "anguish over this country." In this category falls ERNESTO SABATO. " (ARCOMANO D. 2008. Before I die: Ernesto Sabato )
Sabato: apologist for the military dictatorship
"I thanked him personally the coup of 24 March, which saved the country from disgrace, and I expressed my sympathy for having faced the responsibilities of government. I have never managed to run my life, unless it could run a country" said Jorge Luis Borges, and journalists smiled at Government House: it had a title for your notes.
On Wednesday 19, Borges, Ernesto Sabato, Horacio Esteban Ratti (President Argentina Society of Writers) and Leonardo Castellani (a priest who wrote) lunch for more than two hours with Gen. Jorge Videla and another general, Jose Villarreal, Secretary General the Chair.
First the coterie drank whiskey, sherry and fruit juice. Videla initiated the conversation by asking Borges on his trip to the United States and the results of his eye operation.
When he recovered, all passed the private dining room. "The development of culture is essential for the development of a Nation" , Videla said several times, and the others nodded.
To the right of the president was the father Castellani. On the left, Ernesto Sabato. Borges front. And their sides and general Ratti Villarreal.
A waiter served them a menu that the press described as "sober" pudding vegetables with white sauce, ravioli, and fruit salad with cream or sweet milk, wine Bianchi red white 1887 and San Felipe. Videla, said later writers, was devoted to listening and repeated them several times that he was an honor to share that table with such important figures.
"It is impossible to synthesize a two-hour conversation short, but I can say with the president of the Nation talking about culture general, spiritual issues, cultural, historical and linked to the mass media. There was a high degree of understanding and mutual respect, and at any time the conversation went down to the literary and ideological controversy and fell not the sin of falling into banality, each of us unhesitatingly poured his personal conception of the topics discussed. He said the exit and the press, Ernesto Sabato, and continued: "It was a long journey through the cultural problems of the country. We talked about the transformation of Argentina, from a necessary renewal of their culture
- then asked his opinion about Videla: "General Videla me gave an excellent impression. This is a cultured man, modest and intelligent. I am impressed by the open-mindedness and culture of the president. Ernesto Sabato said and journalists turned to smile: it had a lock.
- In 1978, Sabato would explain its position in an article in the German magazine Geo: "The vast majority of Argentines almost begging for the military takeover. All we wanted to end this shameful government of gangsters " said, explaining the March coup. And, later: " Unfortunately it happened that the general disorder, crime and economic distress was so great that the new leaders and not enough to overcome the means the rule of law. For the meantime, the crimes of the extreme left were answered with savage reprisal attacks from the extreme right. The left-wing extremists had carried out the most infamous kidnapping and nastiest monstrous crimes ". And to conclude: " Certainly in recent months, many things have improved in our country: the terrorist groups have been brought largely under control. " (Read more ...)

Ernesto Sabato supported military dictatorships in Argentina. In 1955 it was official dictatorship that seized power murdering political opponents, "Revolution Liberation "of General Aramburu. When President Illia was overthrown by General Ongania Sabato applauded saying
" We must have the courage to understand that they have finished, they had just institutions in which no one seriously believed. Do you believe in the Chamber of Deputies ? " (People Magazine 7/28/1966).
S Abato had access to publication in newspapers of the dictatorship, which informed them of "subversive killed in action "we all knew that it was execution. In those pages referring to the dictator as "president." Later, saying he would defend Videla represented the moderate wing of the dictatorship, moderate! Understand what Sabato by moderate?: Disappeared, killed, planning a genocide, torture, rob homes and businesses, stealing babies and keep them under false identities, to bankrupt the country economically. As clearly tells
Osvaldo Bayer, later the wolf was put back sheepskin and tried to justify the visit to support the serial murderer as a claim for missing colleagues. The other guests Sabato denied that version, and in fact, reported that the writer proposed a censorship board for television. One text
Sabato memorable at the time of the dictatorship is shown naked in his ideology:
Osvaldo Bayer, in exile, told how Sabato supported the dictatorship promoting the World Cup 1978 in various media, including highlights a footnote in the German magazine Geo-Magazin in which described the Argentines as "skin color of Europeans" who "eat like the Italians and dresses like an Englishman." The Argentine intellectual blanked the horrors of dictatorship while leaving poor showing Argentine refugees in Europe. Sabato was efficient when making up the genocide: killing two birds with one stone.

" Continuity Martinez de Hoz no question, but whom no one supports more religious that Lieutenant General Videla. Exactly that: a true act of faith towards the management of the minister, expressing more than a political act virtually religious support . "E. Sabato in The Nation .

Sabato Once democracy returned to hide his true personality, which deployed with impunity in the dictatorship. He was summoned by President Alfonsin to preside over the National Commission on Disappeared People (CONADEP). The commission's findings were reflected in the report called Sabato or "Never Again. National Commission report on the disappearance of people. "
The foreword to the report signed it himself Sabato, among other things says
. .. undoubtedly the most terrible tragedy in its history that the nation suffered during the military dictatorship that lasted initiated in March 1976 will help us understand that only democracy can save a people of such horror, that only she can keep and save the sacred and essential rights of the human creature. Only then can we be sure that NO MORE in our country will repeat the facts we have made tragically famous in the civilized world ... "

Funny how in a short time Sabato went from praising and supporting the dictatorship define it as "the most terrible drama that throughout its history suffered the Nation" . is true and he was a cultural representative of that terrible drama. In the same introduction took the opportunity to incorporate called "theory of two evils" , which can be summarized as intellectual explanation adage "something be done" which justifies accusing the system of terror Victims no longer can defend.
